Ness, EarthBound, and Search Engine Marketing

By Rob Sutter

If there's one Nintendo title that should be given more respect than what it has now, I'd believe it to be "EarthBound." Considered to be one of the finest RPGs with the utmost character, it sadly has not been given the amount of respect which gamers felt like it deserved and I don't find this to be right. I'm sure that gamers today would have loved to play the Super Nintendo classic from back then. More people should know of it and search engine marketing would be the tool to use.

When you think about roleplaying games, typically your mind would go to medieval times. You would think about such things as knights, castles, and dragons amidst the laundry list of clichs associated with the genre. However, "EarthBound" was different in that it broke away from conventions and allowed gamers to travel in what was, in essence, a world not unlike our own. Even the characters you play as and learn about are not ones you'd associate with medieval times or somewhere around that era.

There is a slew of characters associated with the game but the undisputed star has got to be Ness. He is a child living in a city with an adventure ahead of him, so it's fair to assume that he's not going to travel into castles in order to save damsels in distress. Ness seems to have a very common goal that we can relate to. In my mind, it would do the game no favors if, for example, he was someone who had to fulfill some kind of prophecy.

It's clear that this game has the potential to appeal to a greater audience so that everyone would be able to take part in playing it. However, the game's popularity did not exactly soar and, to this day, I cannot seem to figure out why that is. It's not that the quality of the game was shoddy but perhaps the Super Nintendo was simply too dense with great names for its own good and search engine marketing could have helped. Whatever the case may be, agencies along the lines of fishbat could have helped it in terms of notoriety.

If you're someone who's eying to play the game on a digital platform, think about other alternatives. Nintendo has not released it in this day and age, the biggest problem having to be the amount of copyright issues which plague the title. It's a shame because I think that this is one title any gamer should be able to play. To me, it shouldn't have to take an old Super Nintendo to experience one of the better gaming experiences that was crafted thanks to Nintendo.
