There are many different scanners that exists. The term may be used to describe a special type of radio, devices used in the medical field for tests and procedures, or the many devices used in computing to scan printed text, objects, images and more. All devices are different, but there are some general steps that can be taken to learn how to scan.

To scan something is to make a digital file of it on the computer. In order to do this, a person must have an image scanner and a computer. These devices come in various models and makes, and some include printers as well. Generally these are in stock at electronic or home stores, with prices varying. Some products require a specific software be used along with the machine.

Ensure that both of the devices are turned on. The scanning device and the computer have to be connected in some way, either through wirelessly or through cables. Put the image, paper, or object onto the scanner and press the button for scan.

There are two main types of scanners available: sheetfed and flatbed. As its name suggests, sheetfed models allow for only paper, photos or items that fit in the feed slot. Contrastingly, flatbed types have a lid that can be lifted up to reveal the glass plate where objects should be placed for scanning. With these, leaves, fabric and other similar items can be scanned through.

When the item has successfully gone through this process, it will show up in digital form on the computer. From here, there may be more options available, based on the computer, scanning device and software employed. Individuals might choose to crop a portion of the image, adjust viewing settings or even do a rescan. Once the necessary adjustments have been made, the item should be saved to the computer. People may choose to print a copy of the scan as well, which is easy to do if the device is also a printer.

Be sure to read the instruction manual that comes with the various devices, if there are issues. Certain items cannot be used through a scanner and in some of these cases, a photograph of the object would be best. There is not much maintenance or upkeep involved with owning these structures. However, keeping the glass plate clean is important.

This is the method many people use to share photographs, documents, book pages, and magazine or newspaper articles on the Internet. The entire process usually takes less than five minutes, but will vary based on what items are being transferred and the device being used to do it. Many people choose to resize, filter, sharpen, crop, despeckle, or alter brightness, contrast and color on scans.

It is easy to learn how to scan. There are numerous devices and programs that are used for scanning via computers. People must have a computer and image scanner for the task. Typically the process is only a few minutes and once the image has been sent to the computing device, people will be able to adjust settings.
